Description:

At the session, you will be introduced to:

1. Guidelines for planning interesting summers
2. Advice on participating in useful extracurricular activities
3. Strategies on how to prepare for an outstanding application before senior year

We strongly encourage parents and students from Form 1-5 or Grade 7-11 to come!

Objective:

• Educate students on the importance of the essay, its use in the college admissions process, and what makes an essay successful
• Teach students ways to write the best college application essay they can, and provide tips on how to tackle specific types of essay prompts
• Get students started on brainstorming for and writing their college application essays
• Help students craft effective college essays by feedback and proofreading, both in the brainstorming stage and the writing stage
• Help students with SAT I Writing essays, and provide specific tips on raising their scores on their essays

• Know the importance of the essay in the college admissions process and be willing to commit a significant amount of time to crafting an effective essay
• Know what makes an application compelling in the admissions officers’ eyes, and strive to produce an essay that displays characteristics colleges look for
• Be familiar with ways to be strategic in the writing process, and with ways to tackle different kinds of essay prompts
• Begin the essay writing process and produce effective outlines and essays with Ivy Gate’s help

Objective:

• Introduction to the SAT: Provide students with a sound knowledge of the test structure and contents (test sections, types of questions)
• Techniques for scoring high on the SAT: Provide students with useful and specific tips on doing well on each section and type of questions on the SAT
• Preparing for the SAT (Logistics and Study Plan): Familiarize students with ways to plan ahead and be well-prepared for the test (E.g. Register for the SAT on time, plan when to take the SAT, prepare for the test early, and implement a viable study plan). Teach the importance of starting early in studying for the SAT I (particularly the importance of accumulating a strong vocabulary and being familiar with the types of questions, and the need for sufficient time to do so).
• Resources and support: Provide students with helpful resources they could use in preparing for the SAT.

• Be familiar with SAT I’s structure, types of questions, and logistics
• Learn useful techniques for scoring higher on the SAT I
• Develop a solid study plan for the SAT I
• Be able to locate and use various resources (including test prep books, online resources and tools) to score higher on the SAT I

• Assist students to target and develop a set of attractive ECAs
• Training of good communication skills for interviews
• Constructing a concise and strong resume
• Streamlining the entire application (essay, ECA, resume, supplementary materials, interview) to exhibit a presentable and passionate character.

• Skills to update and refine a complete and concise resume
• Identify good topics/stories that students can “re-use” in interviews
• Specify certain character and “strengths” that student should exhibit in application

Objective:

• Help students understand their personalities, interests and career paths

• Help students formulate a balanced college list that fits both the parents’ and the students’ criteria

*       Current undergraduate student in US or UK university
or
*       Rising freshman in US or UK university graduating high school

Hours:
*       Flexible schedule, with work-at-home time
*       Range: 25-40 hours a week
